Whew... I'm just about numb, mentally and emotionally. From assiduously following this LA fire drama since it ballooned into major scale. It was not a truly successful series. It ran only 2 seasons. In the first season, the ratings weren't great, so they tinkered with it, and in the second season, they truly ruined it. There were two problems with the show in the first season. One was inconsistent quality of scripts. Some were very good. Some not so good.

Why?

Probably a money thing. NIGHTS was a spinoff companion show to BAYWATCH, and as such they were probably not paying as much for the scripts on NIGHTS, and thus...

You imagined being friends with these people and hanging out with them because they had such cool personalities, and such personal savvy. That was a major appeal point for the show.

Did you like MIAMI VICE?

The TV series, not the movie, yeah, I luv it. Was awesome. I also luv LA LAW... a series from the late 80's into the 90's. And again because-- relatable charatcers --who you thought you'd enjoy having as friends. Oh, while we're talking TV series... I should give a salute to SILK STALKINGS. Was very well scripted and always tongue in cheek fun,. It lasted many seasons and went thru two cast changes. THE LAST duo of cast leads, Chris Potter and Janet Gunn were fantastic in their roles. And for Janet the best role she ever played. She absolutely sparkled in her detective role in SILK STALKINGS.

So it's a coldddddddd night where I am. Thought to just do some casual convo off the cuff to be (hopefully) mildly entertaining.

SITCOMS... I never really much liked the show 'Seinfeld'. Found the humor rather childish and yawn-inducing most of the time. I've only posted clips from the show recently because Paramount-Plus made a whole slew available on YouTube, and some are kinda funny. But I think the main reason the show was a hit was... AT THAT TIME in our society, people were becoming very clique-y/tribal. And your group of friends became an emotional quicksand-taking up more and more of your time. Which was a bad habit. Took away from thinking for oneself and pursuing self-directed aims. (Not totally, but you know what I mean. OVER-spending time with a clique of friends/buddies is a mildly negative/neurotic habit).... Another reason the show is weird is that the array of characters made no sense to be friends with one another. They all had nothing in common. Plus, aside from Kramer, the acting talents were ugly. Jerry was/is geek-faced ugly. Yet the show pretended he wasn't off-puttingly ugly. He was/is.... Elaine was the plainest of plain Janes, and her face looked like a pancake. Not special, not attractive. And George was simply cringy and repulsive. So the look of the show was off-putting, as well as the style of chat in it [as far as I was concerned]... As for the other major hit sitcom from that era... 'Friends', I was somewhat a fan but not totally. There were flaws in the show's setup premise, which I found a bit off-putting. And they were mostly with the male characters. The female characters were fine, fathomable, and fun. The males were emo-immature, and very neurotic. Found that a flaw in the show's appeal. But overall, a lot funnier than Seinfeld... The 1960s retro sitcom, Dick Van Dyke Show, was very clever and still holds up well when viewed today. As a male, I can tell you, Mary Tyler Moore was an indispensable part of the show. She was a former model and professional dancer before she landed that role. So naturally she was ultra pretty, elegant, and in shape. Very magnetic. If the wife were not an actress so delightful in feminine appeal --all the jokes in the world would not have made the show. Mary and Dick were fabulous in their report in that show. too.

And instead of taking the stage with the kind of hubris Ricky Gervais always had, she tried mostly to not trigger people. And so was boring. She looked nice in that silver dress, though. An A+ mark for that. As for her face, she looked like a different person. She's obviously had more than one thing done in plastic surgery. (me) So an unusual day today. I'll share in more detail than I generally do because it will be fun to do so.... Midday I began looking at some news videos, stories, and docus. Because I've been going lite on such during the holidays. Needed to start catching up. ALSO, there was an important errand I needed to do. THIS WEEKEND FOR SURE. Something that was going to be slightly aggravating, so I had been putting it off for a few days, but I could delay it no longer. I needed to pick up some documents. And to do so, I needed to head to a section of the city some distance away. And I decided I would walk there to get the exercise, even though it's cold weather. Basically, an inconvenient errand, in cold winter weather.

ANYWAY... When I headed out for the walk, it was right on the mark of freezing. 32 degrees. But very windy, which made it feel much colder. There is no bus route that goes to the neighborhood I needed to go to, but I was already en route, so I decided to carry on walking. I passed a bodega I wanted to get some things at on the way back; went in just to check their closing time. I learned they were going to close early, in just minutes. So I had to buy that stuff then --and carry two bags of STUFF with me while walking. Also, I was hungry, so I got from the bodega as well, a burger, and fries. Outside the bodega, I sat on some steps nearby to eat the food. I had to eat fast or my ears and fingers would freeze... LOL. So I wolfed the food down, then put my gloves and earmuffs back on and resumed the journey. Finally, I got the place and got the documents. And began the trek home. When I hit the Rite Aid Superstore closest to my home, I went in to warm up and pick up some things I wanted to get in there. But now adding to what I was already carrying, I had a bit of a heavy load, so I needed to take car service home. HOWEVER, I had left my phone at home (I never take my phone with me outdoors these days unless I expect to need it. Whether your phone is on or off, it's sending the surveillance state GPS tracking of your every move at all times. So I leave it at home unless I need to be talking or texting on it while out.).... I had money with me, but not my phone. The manager on duty at Rite Aid... I'm friendly with. I asked if he would do me a favor and call me a taxi. I explained I didn't have my phone with me. He said "No sweat, I'll book you an Uber."... Which was considerate. I asked him the cost so I could give him cash, and he refused to take my money. He said, "Hey, it's Christmas season." I liked and appreciated the gesture. IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT... The Uber arrived quickly. (They always do; no wonder they have decimated the old-school taxi biz.) The Uber arrived literally in 3 min. It was an elegant SUV. Warm and cozy and fresh-scented. Driver was a quite pleasant lady. Jehovah's Witness. We talked about the emotional meaning of the Christmas holiday season. ... Now... FINALLY HOME, with errands done and groceries gathered. (smile)... Having some peanut butter (crunchy, of course) and Chips Ahoy cookies -with cold Pepsi Zero... Soooo, this episode of DEAL took place in December 2005, 19 years ago. Note this... $240,000 at that time would transpose due to inflation into $388,000 today. So the highest offer made to him was the equivalent of $388.00 in today's value of money. Now, a question: would you "look a [$388k] gift horse in the mouth" (as the saying goes)?

The phrase "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" originated from the writings of St. Jerome in the 4th century. The Latin version of the proverb is "Noli equi dentes inspicere donati," which translates to "never inspect the teeth of a gifted horse.". The phrase is a cautionary proverb that means you should not be overly critical or suspicious of any gratuitously gained gift. It's a reminder to be grateful/appreciative for what you receive... that comes- gratuitiously.

Now it was indeed VERY exciting to view this dramatic DEAL segment. But of course there are some lessons. A couple of BIG lessons in the unfolding of the story. ONE is that to be a good gambler, you MUST put rational logic ahead of impulsive emo whims. This gentleman failed to have the self-discipline to do that (or initially realize it). He got giddy with headdiness when things were going his way and didn't realize that mathematically, it was almost certain luck would turn away from him if he rejected the $240k. WHY? Because his streak of fortuitous luck had overstayed its welcome, mathematically speaking. He was due to have the rug pulled from under him. He had been riding on a magic carpet ride of wild and unearned, just perfidious, sheer luck ---for too many rounds in a row. If he got headdy and turned down the 240l, it would, mathematically, be almost assured that fortune would turn on him and bite his ankle. WHICH DID OCCUR.

The original DEAL OR NO DEAL format (which I loved; I don't like the remake versions) was basically an extrapolated version of BLACKJACK. And blackjack is a very disciplined game of odds. You need to play margins and know when to hold em and know when to fold em. I am very good at playing blackjack because I learned how to play it well from a pocket sized digi-game (smile). Years ago, I bought a little handheld gadget, a pocket-sized BLACKJACK (computer-chip run) digi-game. And I used to carry it around and play with it, just like some people carry a rubber ball and squeeze it to build manual hand strength. From habitually playing blackjack on the device, I developed an instinct for how to play the mathematical margins. HENCE, when I happen to watch these reruns of the original DEAL game show, I'm almost always correct in my judgment of knowing when to either take or reject a bank offer. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE between DEAL and playing blackjack at a casino table is this... THE AMOUNTS OF MONEY IN GOLD UP ON THE DEAL GAMEBOARD are hypnotic and misleading fictions. Mere fantasies. Misleading in the sense that they hypnotize the contest to THINK they actually exist and are on a table, and he may get to take them off the table if he keeps being daring. They being on the board allure the mind to subconsciously think those amounts are there like gold bars sitting on a table., but in fact, they exist ONLY IN CONCEPT -- ONLY IN THEORY while one is playing. At any given moment in the game (until the final round of the game) DURING the game, the only thing that is REAL money vis a vis the contestant --is whatever bank offer is on the grid at the moment. Because all the larger numbers on the board are just fantasies. They are not real money available to him or her now. ONLY the bank offer is real money for one =now. So any and every time a contestant rejects a bank offer, they are rejecting real money --in favor of wishful thinking, in favor of a fantasy. In playing a game like the format of the original DEAL, that is a key thing to remember and hold in mind every second. It's like the old axiom: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. HOLDING THAT AXIOM in mind is the only smart way to gamble, the only smart way to play a game like the original DEAL. Or to game and risk take--- in LIFE. For example, that's why one of life's major axioms is the invocation to not quit your present job until you already have the better one lined up...... So anyway, back to this game and this contestant, JASON. He made a critical mistake when rejecting the $240k. Like one of the advisors on his bench said, "Your luck is due to turn." And turn it did. So he ended up with 189k instead of 240k. I mean, lucky for him, he quickly realized he'd overplayed his hand and settled out at the next offer. But the mistake cost him 51 grand. Which in today's money value would equal... $82,000... So his judgment giddiness, his judgment mistake, cost him [today's value] $82k. An expensive learning burden in the heat of decision-making. MY POINT IS THIS: if you play the way I play, if you gamble the way I do (WHEN I gamble, which is not that frequently that I go to AC, but like I say, WHEN I gamble), if one gambles the way I do, you tend to earn a steady and reasonable amount, stage by stage. Health and well-being. A certain ingredient my body needs to have buoyant cartilage in the joints, somehow went below PAR level in my left knee, and suddenly I couldn't walk freely... Friday... as I tried to go to the store late in the afternoon.

Did you have to go to the doctor?

Nope. Because I knew exactly what was happening. It happened to me twice before in my life, but the first time about 13 years ago. The second time, about 10 years ago.

No.

And?

I knew immediately what I had to do and had to get it. So when Cousin Danny (also my housemate) got home from his job Friday evening, he went to the drug store and got it for me.

Glucosamine. It's an OTC non-prescription supplement that adds the specific ingredient that I ran low on to restore the affected cartilage pad to full vibrancy.

I high-dosed it for FOUR DAYS/NIGHTS (not dangerous), and today, I was good to walk around and do stuff, go out, and go to the store.

Whew... I'm just about numb, mentally and emotionally. From assiduously following this LA fire drama since it ballooned into major scale. There were two problems with the show in the first season. One was inconsistent quality of scripts. Some were very good. Some not so good.

Why?

Probably a money thing. NIGHTS was a spinoff companion show to BAYWATCH, and as such they were probably not paying as much for the scripts on NIGHTS, and thus...

The other problem was insufficient promotion. The show as originally constructed had a lot of built-in appeal, but it was not well promoted.

What was the most appealing element for you?

The TV series, not the movie, yeah, I luv it. Was awesome. I also luv LA LAW... a series from the late 80's into the 90's. Was very well scripted and always tongue in cheek fun,. It lasted many seasons and went thru two cast changes. THE LAST duo of cast leads, Chris Potter and Janet Gunn were fantastic in their roles. So it's a coldddddddd night where I am. Thought to just do some casual convo off the cuff to be (hopefully) mildly entertaining.

SITCOMS... I never really much liked the show 'Seinfeld'. Found the humor rather childish and yawn-inducing most of the time. I've only posted clips from the show recently because Paramount-Plus made a whole slew available on YouTube, and some are kinda funny. But I think the main reason the show was a hit was... AT THAT TIME in our society, people were becoming very clique-y/tribal. And your group of friends became an emotional quicksand-taking up more and more of your time. Which was a bad habit. Took away from thinking for oneself and pursuing self-directed aims. (Not totally, but you know what I mean. OVER-spending time with a clique of friends/buddies is a mildly negative/neurotic habit).... Another reason the show is weird is that the array of characters made no sense to be friends with one another. They all had nothing in common. Plus, aside from Kramer, the acting talents were ugly. Jerry was/is geek-faced ugly. Yet the show pretended he wasn't off-puttingly ugly. He was/is.... Elaine was the plainest of plain Janes, and her face looked like a pancake. Not special, not attractive. And George was simply cringy and repulsive. So the look of the show was off-putting, as well as the style of chat in it [as far as I was concerned]... As for the other major hit sitcom from that era... 'Friends', I was somewhat a fan but not totally. There were flaws in the show's setup premise, which I found a bit off-putting. And they were mostly with the male characters. The female characters were fine, fathomable, and fun. The males were emo-immature, and very neurotic. Found that a flaw in the show's appeal. But overall, a lot funnier than Seinfeld... The 1960s retro sitcom, Dick Van Dyke Show, was very clever and still holds up well when viewed today. As a male, I can tell you, Mary Tyler Moore was an indispensable part of the show. She was a former model and professional dancer before she landed that role. So naturally she was ultra pretty, elegant, and in shape. Very magnetic. If the wife were not an actress so delightful in feminine appeal --all the jokes in the world would not have made the show. Mary and Dick were fabulous in their report in that show. too.

And instead of taking the stage with the kind of hubris Ricky Gervais always had, she tried mostly to not trigger people. And so was boring. She looked nice in that silver dress, though. An A+ mark for that. As for her face, she looked like a different person. She's obviously had more than one thing done in plastic surgery. I passed a bodega I wanted to get some things at on the way back; went in just to check their closing time. I learned they were going to close early, in just minutes. So I had to buy that stuff then --and carry two bags of STUFF with me while walking. Also, I was hungry, so I got from the bodega as well, a burger, and fries. Outside the bodega, I sat on some steps nearby to eat the food. I had to eat fast or my ears and fingers would freeze... LOL. So I wolfed the food down, then put my gloves and earmuffs back on and resumed the journey. Finally, I got the place and got the documents. And began the trek home. When I hit the Rite Aid Superstore closest to my home, I went in to warm up and pick up some things I wanted to get in there. But now adding to what I was already carrying, I had a bit of a heavy load, so I needed to take car service home. HOWEVER, I had left my phone at home (I never take my phone with me outdoors these days unless I expect to need it. Whether your phone is on or off, it's sending the surveillance state GPS tracking of your every move at all times. So I leave it at home unless I need to be talking or texting on it while out.).... I had money with me, but not my phone. The manager on duty at Rite Aid... I'm friendly with. I asked if he would do me a favor and call me a taxi. I explained I didn't have my phone with me. He said "No sweat, I'll book you an Uber."... Which was considerate. I asked him the cost so I could give him cash, and he refused to take my money. He said, "Hey, it's Christmas season." I liked and appreciated the gesture. IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT... The Uber arrived quickly. (They always do; no wonder they have decimated the old-school taxi biz.) The Uber arrived literally in 3 min. It was an elegant SUV. Warm and cozy and fresh-scented. Driver was a quite pleasant lady. Jehovah's Witness. We talked about the emotional meaning of the Christmas holiday season. ... Now... FINALLY HOME, with errands done and groceries gathered. (smile)... Having some peanut butter (crunchy, of course) and Chips Ahoy cookies -with cold Pepsi Zero... Expecting Sam to come bouncing in anytime to get his supper.... It's the last hours of the CHRISTMAS SEASON.

Soooo, this episode of DEAL took place in December 2005, 19 years ago. Note this... $240,000 at that time would transpose due to inflation into $388,000 today. So the highest offer made to him was the equivalent of $388.00 in today's value of money. Now, a question: would you "look a [$388k] gift horse in the mouth" (as the saying goes)?

The phrase "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" originated from the writings of St. Jerome in the 4th century. The Latin version of the proverb is "Noli equi dentes inspicere donati," which translates to "never inspect the teeth of a gifted horse.". The phrase is a cautionary proverb that means you should not be overly critical or suspicious of any gratuitously gained gift. It's a reminder to be grateful/appreciative for what you receive... that comes- gratuitiously.

Now it was indeed VERY exciting to view this dramatic DEAL segment. But of course there are some lessons. A couple of BIG lessons in the unfolding of the story. ONE is that to be a good gambler, you MUST put rational logic ahead of impulsive emo whims. This gentleman failed to have the self-discipline to do that (or initially realize it). He got giddy with headdiness when things were going his way and didn't realize that mathematically, it was almost certain luck would turn away from him if he rejected the $240k. WHY? Because his streak of fortuitous luck had overstayed its welcome, mathematically speaking. He was due to have the rug pulled from under him. He had been riding on a magic carpet ride of wild and unearned, just perfidious, sheer luck ---for too many rounds in a row. If he got headdy and turned down the 240l, it would, mathematically, be almost assured that fortune would turn on him and bite his ankle. WHICH DID OCCUR.

The original DEAL OR NO DEAL format (which I loved; I don't like the remake versions) was basically an extrapolated version of BLACKJACK. And blackjack is a very disciplined game of odds. You need to play margins and know when to hold em and know when to fold em. I am very good at playing blackjack because I learned how to play it well from a pocket sized digi-game (smile). Years ago, I bought a little handheld gadget, a pocket-sized BLACKJACK (computer-chip run) digi-game. And I used to carry it around and play with it, just like some people carry a rubber ball and squeeze it to build manual hand strength. From habitually playing blackjack on the device, I developed an instinct for how to play the mathematical margins. HENCE, when I happen to watch these reruns of the original DEAL game show, I'm almost always correct in my judgment of knowing when to either take or reject a bank offer. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE between DEAL and playing blackjack at a casino table is this... THE AMOUNTS OF MONEY IN GOLD UP ON THE DEAL GAMEBOARD are hypnotic and misleading fictions. Mere fantasies. Misleading in the sense that they hypnotize the contest to THINK they actually exist and are on a table, and he may get to take them off the table if he keeps being daring. They being on the board allure the mind to subconsciously think those amounts are there like gold bars sitting on a table., but in fact, they exist ONLY IN CONCEPT -- ONLY IN THEORY while one is playing. At any given moment in the game (until the final round of the game) DURING the game, the only thing that is REAL money vis a vis the contestant --is whatever bank offer is on the grid at the moment. Because all the larger numbers on the board are just fantasies. They are not real money available to him or her now. ONLY the bank offer is real money for one =now. So any and every time a contestant rejects a bank offer, they are rejecting real money --in favor of wishful thinking, in favor of a fantasy. In playing a game like the format of the original DEAL, that is a key thing to remember and hold in mind every second. It's like the old axiom: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. HOLDING THAT AXIOM in mind is the only smart way to gamble, the only smart way to play a game like the original DEAL. Or to game and risk take--- in LIFE. For example, that's why one of life's major axioms is the invocation to not quit your present job until you already have the better one lined up...... So anyway, back to this game and this contestant, JASON. He made a critical mistake when rejecting the $240k. Like one of the advisors on his bench said, "Your luck is due to turn." And turn it did. So he ended up with 189k instead of 240k. I mean, lucky for him, he quickly realized he'd overplayed his hand and settled out at the next offer. But the mistake cost him 51 grand. Which in today's money value would equal... $82,000... So his judgment giddiness, his judgment mistake, cost him [today's value] $82k. An expensive learning burden in the heat of decision-making. MY POINT IS THIS: if you play the way I play, if you gamble the way I do (WHEN I gamble, which is not that frequently that I go to AC, but like I say, WHEN I gamble), if one gambles the way I do, you tend to earn a steady and reasonable amount, stage by stage. You tend to make reasonable gains and have few losses. Yes, sure, once in a while-- with this disciplined strategy being held in dominance over unchecked emo impulses.... Once in a while, it means you miss a bigger pot you might have scored.. But not that often. Most often it leads you to make reasonable steady advances and endure few losses, which is the smart way to play. Those who go mostly on emo impulses and whims are the ones who have big highs and big lows and tend to get into trouble with big losses. Good gambling, wise risk-taking, is more about discipline and rational calculations than anything else. This gent could have won VERY big if he'd played that way. Instead, YEAH, HE WON SOME GOOD MONEY ...BUT he lost the chance TO TAKE HOME MUCH MORE.... The key lesson is to blend rational calculations ---with discipline.

NADINE'S OVERTURE

You probably recall the movie Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy and Jada Pinkett... It's not at all uncommon in college for coeds to have crushes on their profs and profs to get crushes on coeds. And it's also not too uncommon that "decorum rules" are ignored and some coed and some prof start an affair. We know these things happen. So now to our story..... NADINE is a college senior at Boston University. She's age 22. And she just happens to be quite gorgeous and hot. It's late September. The current school year began mere weeks ago. Nadine had a summer fling while home for the break season. But she left that affair at home when she came back to Boston. It wasn't serious. Just frolicking..... She has a hot wardrobe returning to school because she likes showing off her charms and getting attention. So far, even though this is her final college year, she's undecided as to if she'll stay in Boston and get a job there, or go back to San Diego and get a job there. But she has months to decide. So she can think about it for a while.

Meantime, intrigue has flashed its allure. One of her classes is a philosophy course, and the main teacher is dreamy. A hunk from Austria. Devon Kalder... Rules be damned, dangers be damned, she wants to connect with him and date him. Why not? She's away from home. Boston is a party town because of all the universities. Why not have some spicy forbidden fun during her last months of college?

She starts showing up for his classes in irresistible wearables and wearing enticing fragrances. Certainly he notices. How could he not?

Being daringly adventurous, she asks him at class's end one day if she could have a conference in his office this week to discuss a textbook chapter she's having trouble with. He says... Sure, my pleasure.... Of course, she knows IT WILL BE, his pleasure. And a fierce temptation.

She makes an appointment to arrive at his office next afternoon at 5 p.m. She shows up wearing tantalizing, stretchy, short shorts ---and a silk blouse with no bra.

Devon almost gasps aloud when he sees her walk in but tries to remain outwardly composed. Within minutes of their huddle beginning, he realizes the request for the conference was a pose. She just came to tantalize him. This causes some anxiety because he's new at the school this semester. Wants to be regarded well and have a good tenure. Although she's delectable, her overture gives him anxiety. On the other hand, he is a normal man, and she is captivating. He decides to create an option to explore. He tells her the conversation they are having is very interesting, but he has to go take care of something and cut it short. But he'll be happy to continue tomorrow. Will she meet him for dinner at Ellison's Seafood restaurant at 7 pm?

She playfully says... Sure, my pleasure.... He's already tuned in to her flirtation well enough to know, yes, it will be her pleasure.

Both of them know what they are headed to dinner for. To weigh the possibility of a fling.
