Ford is recalling 1.1 million pickup trucks because potential problems with their gas tanks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The automaker is recalling certain Ford F-150, F-250 and Lincoln Blackwood pickup trucks, the NHTSA said in a report on its website, noting prolonged exposure to road de-icing chemicals may corrode the straps holding the fuel tanks in place in the vehicles.
If the straps break, they could allow the vehicle's fuel lines to separate from the tank, potentially causing the tank to contact the ground, which may result in a fuel leak and a fire hazard, the NHTSA said.
Ford will notify owners of the issue and ask them to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their fuel tank straps replaced, or replaced with fuel straps with increased corrosion protection, according to the NHTSA's report.
